Our Review
The first part of the CD--Act I--is prelude, as this awesome folk trio plays traditional folk carols from the fifteenth century to the present. For fans of renaissance minstrelsy, Miller, K, and McGann offer spirited renditions of Gloucester Wassail and the Coventry Carol. Using enchantingly simple arrangements, they cover a wonderful set of traditional carols. This set also includes a beautiful song called Brightest and Best, a song I've never heard before. I also enjoyed their arrangement of the Huron Carol.
But it was Act II that really got my attention. I am a dobro fan, and I find the dobro to be somewhat infrequently used as instrumental accompaniment on Christmas records. David K plays a beautiful dobro on Cathy Miller's composition Tonight is for Christmas, a moving, somewhat tear inducing road song. This is my favorite song on the record, just barely edging out Rejoice! Rejoice!, one of three originals by Eileen McGann and just the sort of upbeat midwinter song I'll need to hear on a cold morning sometime in late December.
There are several songs I'll want to listen to during the non-Christmas months, and there are other pleasant little surprises awaiting listeners, including one of my top 10 favorites--Christmas in the Trenches--and a clever cover of You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.
