Our Review
Most of the compositions on this CD were written and arranged by Mr. Bonfield, who is an excellent composer and arranger. But in addition to his fine arrangements of seasonal music, he allows the recording of a few traditional favorites, including Greensleeves, which he performs with an awesome tone.
And then, when one imagines he has no more gifts to unwrap, Bonfield opens the box containing the jewel Edelweiss! This is a beautiful song, hinting at the coming spring as we yet wait inside by the fire. Since ancient times Christmas has been celebrated at mid-winter, because the birth of Christ foreshadows man's redemption just as the solstice foretells of spring. Why not Edelweiss? It is a beautiful flourish on this CD of the seasons.
Bonfield creates a wall of sound, beginning with Celtic Wandering and ending with Silent Night and Farewell, his homage to Auld Lang Syne. It all makes for a Winternight to remember.
