Our Review

This was a surprising record, surprising in its style, its range and its complexity. I had expected something a bit more Reggae and was surprised to find music that encompassed, Calypso, jazz and pop. I particularly enjoyed the island overtones, as they seemed to bring a fresh, salty fragrance to the music, without completely overpowering it.

Charles' pan music was most effective on the Christian songs, such as Away in a Manger and What Child Is This. And he brought a wonderfully festive Calypso sound to Mary's Little Boy Child.

All in all, this is a very listenable record, and an important addition to the collection of anyone who appreciates the music of the Caribbean islands.
