Our Review

A Brand New Christmas is easy-listening Southern gospel every step of the way, and John Jones has the impressive vocal instrument necessary to convert the masses. Whew! This former country singer delivers sensational performances for the Lord, and his passionate interpretations may make you stand and applaud (or kneel and pray--the choice is yours).

By the way, appearances can certainly be deceiving. At first glance, Jones appears to be a relatively mild-mannered, somewhat bookish fellow with a gentle smile. You might imagine that he sings in meek and mousey tones, but you would be wrong. When Jones opens his mouth, his powerful projection blows that mild-mannered assumption out of the water. This tenor's fine voice is the real deal.

Jones is a first-rate tenor, and he puts his considerable talents to good use on A Brand New Christmas, whether he is nailing the highest notes of the emotional Mary Did You Know? (my personal favorite on the album or sweetly promising that he'll Be Home for Christmas (if only in his dreams). Jones also impresses on the up-tempo, gritty-spirited That Little Bitty Baby and His Name Is Jesus; on these, Jones' country roots are most apparent, and he presents the tunes with more texture and verve. Nice job!
