Our Review
My first impression is one of emotional depth. Mr. Lanz writes in the liner notes that this record was recorded at a time of introspection in his life. I can believe it. It is as though he is charged with emotion and that emotion is transmitted through his fingers to the keys of his piano. The rich, moody textures of this recording are evidence of tremendously intense searching.
The holidays are a time of reflection, nostalgia, and intense emotion, and the themes of the winter season are deeply evocative for many. So, it is no wonder that Lanz's style of play would produce a work of such profound beauty, beauty that reaches into and between every note. Particularly between the notes, as the work is laced with thoughtful pauses.
But into this mix he also takes some liberties, adding a number of uniquely beautiful riffs and improvisations. And between the seasonal standards, he has chosen to record seven original compositions: a series of "Angel" interludes which tie the work together. (The inclusion of these melodies led me to sometimes forget I was listening to a Christmas record.)
I love the great holiday themes. They often leave me feeling more complete. So, I am always pleased to note when someone has captured their essense and served them back with such power and grace.
